to prepare for the monday debate. the president is heading to camp david to do his debate preparation there. >> we invite you to read up on all of the referendum questions using our new election 2012 smartphone app. you can also keep up with the presidential campaigns. >> some good news on the jobs front in maryland. the labor department reports the state added 9800 jobs in september. that dropped the unemployment rate to 6.9%. 4100 jobs were added in the professional and business services area. the state also saw gains in transportation, warehousing, utilities, education, and health care. maryland is one of 40 states that saw a drop in the unemployment rate last month. >> the fate of two officers accused of beating a university

of maryland college park student lies in the hands of the jury. lowell melser joins us live from upper marlborough with more on the proceedings. >> closing arguments to much of the day. the jury got the case around 3:00 this afternoon. they have been deliberating for about three hours. the jury has made two requests. the most important being to see the videotape of the beating. reginald baker and james harrison are the two officers facing second-degree assault and misconduct charges. they're waiting on the verdict. the case narrowly avoided a mistral after it was revealed the judge was previously married to a p.g. county officer convicted of using excessive force. they are accused of abusing their power when they beat the university of maryland student during a riot situation on march 3 of 2010. the incident was caught on video

from a student in a nearby apartment building. throughout the trial, both men took the witness stand to tell their side of the story claiming mckenna was the aggressor and startled a mounted horse. batons. him with their the attorneys emphasized their clients were doing what they could to diffuse a dangerous situation. prosecutors claimed the man overreacted and the video showed the officers continued to beat on mckenna even though he was on the ground and not fighting back. prosecutors questioned harrison's integrity pointing out he initially lied to investigators claiming he had nothing to do with it and later recanted his story. he said the request made by the jury was to order pizza, meeting

deliberations will continue into the evening. the officers are facing charges of second-degree assault and misconduct. i am lowell melser, wbal-tv 11 news. >> a 21-year-old anne arundel county man faces counts of animal cruelty. animal control officers retrieved a number of dogs, cats, and exotic pets from the pasadena home of shane taylor. many of the animals were without adequate food and water. some had died. he denies the charges and insists he provided appropriate care. his curly on $10,000 bond. howard county -- he is currently out on to a dozen or bond. michael stephen mckenny faces burglary and videotaping without consent charges. 11 news show the video yesterday. investigators say he used hidden cameras to secretly record two women inside the home.

detectives believe he knew the victims and had stolen and copied the key to their condominium. they say he entered it several times beginning in june. authorities are working to notify two other women recorded in a separate incident. they're looking into whether other victims may have been videotaped. he is being held on bond. >> thousands of files outlining decades of abuse revealed some of the alleged cases reportedly took place in maryland. they include locations in baltimore, frederick, and others. the boy scouts' national office released a statement acknowledging past responses were not always appropriate. the organization says it is committed to protecting boys from abuse. experts suggest parents should stay engaged in a children's activities. >> it is beginning a dialogue to figure out what is going on.

you know who you trust with your kids. >> experts warn parents to be mindful of anyone who wants to have time outside of the regular program time with children. >> one year after the murder of a 21-year-old man, his family is offering a $10,000 reward to find his killer. baltimore county police found ernest gale shot to death last october. authorities released surveillance pictures of three suspects. the victim's mother is hoping the pictures will lead to the rest of those who killed her son. >> that is what we're hoping today. somebody will look at these pictures and recognize them and make a phone call to help us get justice for our son. >> crime stoppers is also offering a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspects. >> stay with us. more news ahead on 11 news at

>> it has been five years since the baltimore school system updated its student search policy. that is about to change. the school board will review changes next week. the review comes on the heels of four gun-related incidents on school campuses. the new head of safety and security says the district will continue to enforce the policy on the books until a revised one is adopted. >> parent notification is important, but sometimes the need for safety and security in reacting to an emergency

situation, we have the right to search our lockers. they belong to the school system. that is potentially done. >> the public will get to comment on the revised policy before it is adopted in december. >> math teachers are hard to come by in maryland and across the nation. that explains why the state is trying to get more math teachers. tim tooten has that story. >> educators say they believe they know why so few teachers are signing up for math. may have to do with the with the subject is being taught in the early years. math teachers spend a full day in the classroom to brush up on the basics and share ideas. >> you get to collaborate with a lot of teachers from different areas. i am high school. it is interesting to see the elementary school. we teach a lot of things they

teach as well. >> the maryland teachers held their annual conference. this was part of their strategy. to help the teachers build bridges between what is being taught now and how to use those lessons to reach teacher educators. >> when you get a teacher to help you make connections, all the sudden, your tune into it and cannot wait to do more. >> university students also showed up for the math conference. it did not take long to steer them toward math education. >> i was in engineering. i wanted to be in something where people help each other. >> organizers believe the conference is a first step in helping to bring more math teachers to the classroom. in baltimore teacher just received the maryland council for excellence in teaching
